Buy pastalaya for breast cancer awareness

On Thursday, Oct. 24, a Breast Cancer Awareness benefit will be hosted by the city of Zachary.

A plate lunch of pastalaya, prepared by Zachary Police Capt. Shawn Pratt, along with salad and dessert will be sold for $10. All proceeds will go to the Foundation for Women's Bust Breast Cancer, a project organized by graduates of the Zachary Chamber of Commerce Leadership North group. 

The serving tent will be in the city of Zachary Annex parking lot. Plates will be sold starting at 11 a.m.

Helping North Carolina

On Facebook, the city gave an update on efforts to help hurricane relief in North Carolina.

Mayor David McDavid and the Zachary Strong team have returned from North Carolina. They delivered supplies and provided meals to over 1,000 people in the Asheville area.

The 18-wheeler parked at the city of Zachary annex will remain throughout the month to accept donations, including nonperishable food, blankets, warm clothing, propane, baby food and diapers, and any basic need items. All items will be delivered to those many individuals in need in the Asheville area.

Clean out your home for church event

St. John the Baptist Catholic Church is holding its Community Garage Sale from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m., Nov. 2. People can donate gently used items (no mattresses or box springs) from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., Nov. 1 at the parish activity center at the corner of Lee Street and McHugh Drive.

All proceeds go to parish maintenance. Unsold items will be given to St. Vincent de Paul Society.

Slaughter Fall Festival

The Slaughter Fall Festival will run from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., Saturday, Oct. 26. The free event will feature carnival games, pie smashing, cake walks, bounce houses, food vendors, craft vendors, train rides, an air rifle trailer, costume contest, music and door prizes.

Library events announced

  • LSU School of Theatre, in partnership with the East Baton Rouge Parish Library, presents "Rosita y Conchita," a children's play directed by Marina DeYoe-Pedraza. Based on the award-winning children’s book by Erich Haeger and Eric González, "Rosita y Conchita" tells the story of two sisters trying to reunite on Día de los Muertos (Day of the Dead). This production uses rhyming bilingual dialogue, music and life-size puppets. It will be performed at 2:30 p.m. Nov. 2 at the Zachary Branch and at 10 a.m. Nov. 9 at the Baker Branch.   • "Cherokee Tales," developed in partnership with the Cherokee Historical Association, introduces young audiences to the Cherokee people through a series of stories. Recommended for children, grades K-6. It will be performed at 2:30 p.m. Nov. 23 at the Zachary Branch and 3 p.m. Nov. 24 at the Baker Branch. Check the library website for other performances.
  • The Pride-Chaneyville Branch Library, 13600 Pride-Port Hudson Road, has a couple of events. The Lagniappe Historic Dance & Pastime Society will teach 18th- and 19th-century dances on Thursday evenings in November (excluding Thanksgiving), from 6 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. Wear comfortable shoes. 20-somethings are invited at 4 p.m. Nov. 15 to make book bricks and garden stones. Pink Out Zachary

Mayor David McDavid has designated Thursday, Oct. 24, for Zachary to dress and decorate in support of breast cancer awareness.

Prayer luncheon set

Zachary Mayor David McDavid invites all community members to join the Mayor’s Community Prayer Luncheon on Friday, Oct. 25 at the Family Life Center of First Baptist Church Zachary, 4200 Main St.

A complimentary fried fish lunch will be served from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. The luncheon will feature guest speaker Col. Paul Pride, a retired superintendent of the Ohio State Highway Patrol. The theme for the luncheon is “Faith and Service.” 

Trunk-or-Treat

Local businesses and organizations will participate in the fourth annual Trunk-or-Treat from 3 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. Oct. 27 on Lee Street. Setup starts at 1 p.m. and must be finished by 2:40 p.m. A giant inflatable maze, carnival games, 360 photo booth, food trucks and cotton candy will be available. Special needs children have early entry at 2:45 p.m.

Novemberfest set

St. Patrick’s Episcopal Church’s Novemberfest will be held from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Nov. 2, and will feature games, inflatables, crafts, jambalaya and other food. Proceeds are used to fund outreach ministries of the church. The church is at 1322 Church St., Zachary.

Nov. 16: Memory Lane at the Market from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Area residents are asked to share special memories/items with everyone. Not items to sell.

Nov. 23: 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., Zachary Farmers market Holiday Kickoff. The day will include drawings for Market Money and will celebrate Thanksgiving, football games and Christmas shopping.
