Construction at Lafayette High School can be seen from Marie Antoinette Street on Tuesday, May 28, 2024, in Lafayette.

A construction worker accidentally shot himself while in his car on Lafayette High School's campus Thursday, according to authorities.

The school was not notified of the shooting until after police arrived, according to a Lafayette Parish School System announcement. No students were in danger, officials said.

The shooting occurred at 12:09 p.m., according to Corporal Ashley Wood, a  Lafayette Police Department spokesperson, when a Lemoine construction worker accidently fired one shot into his hand and lower leg in his vehicle. The worker was handling the firearm when it accidentally fired.

The vehicle was parked in a secured area near the construction site that does not have access to the school.

The name of the worker has not been released.

The worker did not notify the school, his company, or law enforcement, according to the LPSS statement. A friend transported the worker to a local hospital, where staff immediately notified police.

Lemoine stopped operation at 2:15 p.m. to conduct a safety assessment and has begun its own investigation.

Initially, police requested a warrant for illegal possession of a weapon in firearm-free zone and illegal discharge of a weapon, but those charges were denied by a judge, Wood said.

Louisiana law prohibits the possession of a gun in a gun-free zone but allows for storage in a private vehicle.
