Record-breaking performances haven't been uncommon for the Acadiana football players over the past two decades.

Typically in the Rams' run-oriented offense those feats involve a running back or maybe a defensive player.

But last week, quarterback Caden and Collin DiBetta set school passing game records in a 48-7 win against Barbe.

“That was definitely a lot of fun,” Caden said. “I don’t usually get to throw the football as often as we did, so I just made the most of the opportunity.”

The senior completed 11-of-13 passes for 301 yards and a school-record five touchdowns.

“Defensively, Barbe put a lot of guys in the box to stop the run,” he said. “So I knew before the game that I was going to have to throw the ball a lot more. I was very happy to hear that because I love throwing the football. Every quarterback loves the opportunity to throw the football.”

While Caden was tossing touchdown after touchdown, his younger brother Collin was his favorite target.

“Collin’s my guy,” Caden said. “He’s been my guy since birth. We have played on every football team together, so it was definitely special to be able to share that moment with him.

"It was only a matter of time. I knew he'd have a breakout game soon."

Collin, a sophomore, scorched Barbe’s defense with five receptions for 156 yards and a school-record four touchdowns.

"It was an amazing feeling when I found out I had set a school record," Collin said. "This is something that I have been working really hard for and to be able to share that moment with my brother made it even better. I know we made our mom proud."

In many ways, it was only a matter of time with their preparation over the years.

"We have been doing this our whole lives," Collin said. "We have good chemistry and a lot of trust in each other. He trusts that I'm going to get open when the play breaks down and I trust that he will be able to make the throw. We have done that in the backyard and in flag football, but to make that happen during a high school game was really a surreal moment."

This season, Caden has completed 37 of 56 passes for 742 yards with 11 touchdowns and one interception. He's rushed for 252 yards and two touchdowns on 34 carries.

Collin, who has also played safety, is averaging more than 29 yards per reception. He's the Rams' leading receiver with 14 catches for 407 yards and six touchdowns.

“Caden and Collin are both capable of making big plays,” coach Matt McCullough said. “They are both extremely hard workers, and they do things the right way. I’m not surprised by their success because we knew they were good players. Caden can run and throw, but he is also a great leader. Collin is extremely explosive with the football in his hands.”

As the Rams (5-1, 3-0 District 3-5A) aim to win a second straight district championship, Caden is closing in on the school's career yards passing.

That record of 3,058 yards, which is held by McCullough, is likely to be broken Friday as Caden (3,024) needs 35 yards to set the mark.

“Having the single-game passing touchdown record is awesome. It is still a surreal feeling,” Caden said. “Setting records isn’t something that I expected to happen. I came here to win championships.

"We throw the football now, so that record will be mine. Putting my name in the record book is special to me.”
